Plain-language guide · Source: VR child ticket information
Short answer
Children under 4 can travel free on long-distance trains without their own seat. Child ticket age limits depend on the train: 4-17 on long-distance trains, 7-17 on VR commuter trains, and 11-17 on night trains.
Long-distance trains
A child ticket usually applies from age 4 to 17. Children under 4 can travel without a separate seat; buy a child ticket if you want the child to have their own seat.
Commuter trains
In VR commuter traffic, children under 7 can travel free. Children aged 7 to 17 use the child fare group.
Night trains
Night-train child rules are different. Children aged 0 to 10 can travel free when sharing a berth; buy a child ticket if the child needs their own berth.
Bring proof of age
A passenger travelling with a child ticket may be asked to prove age during ticket inspection, so an identity card or passport is useful.
