Find your way

Get your bearings, then choose your next connection.

Start on the right side of the tracks.

Station works have changed familiar walking routes. The Asematunneli passage and Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass are closed to pedestrians; use Matkakeskustunneli for the Tulli side and check the city’s current maps.

  • Hämeenkatu

    City-centre side

The main entrance faces the start of Tampere’s central street. The Rautatieasema tram stops are on Hämeenkatu between Rautatienkatu and Tuomiokirkonkatu.

  • Rautatienkatu

    In front of the station

Check the named boarding stop rather than assuming every bus leaves from the same place. Railway-station bus stops also extend along Hämeenkatu; taxis serve the station front.

  • Matkakeskustunneli

Across the railway · Open around the clock

This pedestrian connection links the station with Tulli and Tammela on the east side. Follow the temporary signs rather than a familiar shortcut through the closed passages.

    Long-distance & regional

Tampere is a junction for journeys towards Helsinki, Turku, Pori, Jyväskylä and northern Finland. Find your train and track on the live board; the station guide is not a timetable.

    Nysse local transport

Match the destination, stop code and direction to your service. Rautatieasema tram stops and the railway-station bus stops are separate boarding points. Nysse’s planner shows current connections and ticket zones.

  • Long-distance coaches

    A separate bus station

The main coach station is on Hatanpään valtatie 5–7, not inside the railway station. Check the boarding address on your coach ticket before walking there; some services use other stops.

    Check the connection before travelling

The former airport bus 103 ended on 4 August 2026. Do not plan around an old timetable: check Nysse’s current advice and confirm a connection to your terminal, or arrange a taxi.

Step into Tampere

A short pause or a whole day. Choose a visit that fits your journey.

  • A short stop

    Stay close

Take a coffee near the station, look up at the clock tower and find the platform for your next train. A short connection does not need a city itinerary.

  • A few hours

    Choose one visit

Leave your bag in a locker and choose the Moomin Museum, Vapriikki or a walk beside Tammerkoski. Check the venue’s hours first and allow for the temporary walking routes back.

  • A day in Tampere

    City life & lakes

Combine a museum or the factory district with a public sauna. The city sits between Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi: choose your lakeside destination, plan any Nysse connection and keep the return train in mind.

Places to start with

  • Tammerkoski & Finlayson

    Rapids · Industrial heritage

Follow Hämeenkatu towards the rapids, then explore the red-brick factory quarter. Finlayson’s former cotton-mill area now brings together culture, cafés, restaurants and events: a good way to read the city’s industrial story on foot.

    Explore the Finlayson area
  • Vapriikki

    Museums · Alaverstaanraitti 5

A museum centre in the old Tampella factory setting, with several collections and changing exhibitions under one roof. Check the current programme before choosing a particular museum: exhibition changeovers can affect what is open.

    Plan a Vapriikki visit
  • Moomin Museum

    Art & stories · Yliopistonkatu 55

Discover the Moomin world at Tampere Hall, east of the railway. The station works make the walking route worth checking even when the destination looks close on a map.

    Visit the Moomin Museum
  • Nokia Arena

    Sport & concerts · Kansikatu 3

The arena is about 600 metres from the station. Use the entrance and arrival instructions for your own event; give yourself extra time when crowds and temporary street arrangements meet.

  • Public saunas

    A Tampere tradition

A sauna can be the destination, not just the end of a day out. Choose a venue that suits your journey and check reservations, opening hours and what to bring before leaving the centre.

Good to know

Where are the tram and bus stops?

The Rautatieasema tram stops are on Hämeenkatu, just west of the station front. Railway-station bus stops are on Hämeenkatu and Rautatienkatu. Use Nysse’s stop map and the stop code for your direction; the coach station is a separate place.

How do I reach Tulli or Tampere Hall during the works?

Use Matkakeskustunneli and follow the temporary walking signs. The Asematunneli passage and Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass are closed to pedestrians. Check the city’s current map for your route; do not assume a tram route through the works is also open for walking.

Can I leave a bag while visiting the city?

VR lists card-operated lockers at the station. Check availability, storage period and collection access before leaving your bag. Leave time to collect it and reach the right platform before your train.

Can I use a Nysse ticket on a train?

On eligible regional journeys in the Nysse area, yes: check the covered route, zones and ticket type with Nysse first. Validate the ticket on the platform before boarding. Contactless bus and tram payment cannot be used to pay for train journeys.

Is there still a direct airport bus from the station?

The former airport bus 103 stopped on 4 August 2026. Check Nysse’s current airport advice before planning a public-transport transfer, and confirm that your route reaches the right terminal. Arrange an alternative if it does not suit your flight.

What is worth doing between trains?

With a short stop, stay near the station. With a few hours, choose one museum or a Tammerkoski walk. A longer visit can include a public sauna or an event, with the return journey and any temporary station access planned first.
