Tornio–Haparanda: cross the border by train
Choose the right Tornio station, use separate VR and Norrtåg tickets, and understand Finnish and Swedish local times.

A working cross-border railway again
Daily passenger trains began crossing between Oulu, Tornio and Haparanda on 10 August 2026 after a 38-year break. The route is real, but it is not one operator or one time zone. Start with live Tornio departures.
Choose the right Tornio stop
Tornio Keskusta serves the twin-city centre and the daily Oulu–Haparanda trains. Tornio-Itäinen is a separate stop, around three kilometres from the centre, used by Kolari services. Never substitute one because both contain Tornio in the name.
Read the station limits
VR lists raised platforms and accessible entry to low-floor trains at both Tornio stops. Neither has an assistance service, toilet, ticket machine, luggage lockers or staffed point. Confirm the actual rolling stock and arrange essentials before arrival.
Buy two ticket segments
VR sells the Finnish train to Haparanda. Norrtåg sells onward travel toward Kalix, Boden and Luleå. A connection shown on two timetables is not a through ticket: buy both segments and understand each operator’s disruption and missed-connection conditions.
Compare local time, not clock numbers
Haparanda departures are shown in Swedish time. Tornio departures are shown in Finnish time, one hour ahead. Compare the full date, location and local time for every connection rather than treating the displayed clock difference as transfer time.
What’s on in TornioHaparanda
The shared twin-city calendar is the correct source for current events. Check which country and venue hosts the event, then match that location to Tornio Keskusta, Haparanda station or local transport.
Sources and currency
Station facts come from VR. The service launch, regulatory arrangement, ticket split and time-zone guidance come from official VR Group, Traficom, Norrtåg, Tornio and Visit TornioHaparanda sources, checked 5 October 2026.
