Ring Rail trains are back, but the journey is not fully normal yet

The long closure is over

I and P trains are running around the Ring Rail Line again. The summer closure between Huopalahti and Myyrmäki ended at 04:00 on 10 August 2026, reopening train service at Pohjois-Haaga and Kannelmäki and restoring the familiar airport loop.

That is the headline. The useful passenger detail is that the railway is not yet completely back to normal. Some work continues, and the remaining restrictions affect where trains stop and how often they run.

Malminkartano is still closed

Trains pass through Malminkartano without stopping until 04:00 on 7 September. Passengers who normally use the station need another station or HSL's replacement travel advice. Do not rely only on the route letter: an I or P train may follow its usual route while skipping Malminkartano.

Fewer trains on the western side

Between Helsinki and Myyrmäki, I and P trains run every 20 minutes during much of the daytime and every 30 minutes late in the evening and on weekend mornings. HSL says this reduced frequency continues until 4 October.

The eastern airport route is much closer to its normal service. A and other main-line services have also returned after the wider summer works, but an individual departure can still differ. HSL specifically notes that the daily 21:26 I train from Helsinki is cancelled until 4 October, while the early 04:36 departure has moved to 04:31.

What this means for an airport journey

The airport is reachable by train from both directions again. Even so, allow more margin than you would on a fully normal day—especially if you are travelling from a station on the western side or making a connection at Myyrmäki. A 20- or 30-minute service interval makes a missed train more consequential.

Before leaving, check the live departure board for your station and follow the journey rather than depending on a memorised timetable. Junat shows current station departures and train progress, while HSL remains the authority for replacement routes and ticket validity.

Reopening is a process, not one moment

Large railway works rarely end with every temporary arrangement disappearing at once. The main connection can reopen while platforms, signalling or surrounding sections still need work. For passengers, the clear summary is: I and P trains are back, Malminkartano is not yet open, and the western side runs less often until early October.
