Kotka by train: choose the right city stop
Choose between Kotka and Kotka Port, then plan a clear visit to Vellamo, the old harbour and Kotka’s coastal parks.

Kotka has two useful city stops
Kotka is a rail corridor through Kotkansaari rather than a city with one obvious terminal. Kotka station at Kotkantie 1 serves the central streets. Kotka Port at Satamakatu 9 is the terminus beside the old harbour, Maritime Centre Vellamo and Satama Areena. Choose the stop for the first place you intend to visit.
Check both Kotka departures and Kotka Port departures when planning the return. A local train can call at both, but the station names are not interchangeable.
Read before you go
VR lists no ticket machine, staffed service, toilet, luggage lockers or assistance service at either station. It also lists no raised platforms or accessible access to the platform area. Travellers who need step-free certainty or support should verify the train, platform and alternative boarding arrangement before departure.
Arrange luggage storage with accommodation or another confirmed provider. Do not assume the museum, arena or old bus station can hold bags.
Old Port and Maritime Centre Vellamo
Kotka Port is the clearest arrival for Vellamo. The wave-shaped building contains the Maritime Museum of Finland and Kymenlaakso Museum. Check the current exhibition and opening hours before travelling. Museum vessels are seasonal; Vellamo states that the vessels contain stairs, cramped spaces and are not accessible.
The old harbour is changing, so allow construction and event routing to override an older map. Satama Areena is nearby, but confirm the entrance and event time separately.
A focused park visit
For a shorter city visit, connect the centre with one park destination. Sapokka Water Garden is the clearest choice and remains interesting beyond summer. The full Kotkansaari park route is about five kilometres and should be treated as a longer itinerary, not a quick station loop.
Katariina Seaside Park, the Sculpture Promenade and other parks can extend the route when daylight, weather and return time allow. Sea ice is never assumed safe.
Buses, river and islands are separate plans
Jonne & Minne operates regional buses in Kotka, Hamina and Pyhtää. Use the Kotka journey planner for the exact stop and direction because city-centre routing can change. Langinkoski, the Kymi River and the archipelago require their own transfer and complete return plan. Waterbuses and cruises are seasonal.
What's on in Kotka
Aaltoja! runs in central Kotka from 15 to 17 October 2026. The official programme describes a free 1.7-kilometre route of 13 light and sound works, open 18:00–22:00. Confirm the final route and accessibility for each venue.
Sources and currency
Station facilities and accessibility come from VR’s Kotka and Kotka Port pages. Transport, visitor and museum guidance comes from the City of Kotka, Visit Kotka-Hamina and Maritime Centre Vellamo, checked 4 October 2026. Live boards and operator notices decide the travel day.
