Hanko has a direct weekday train to Helsinki again
A working day in Helsinki no longer has to begin with a change of train in Karjaa. Since 9 August 2026, VR has operated new H trains between Hanko and Helsinki as part of its purchased-service agreement with Traficom.
The timetable is built around commuting. A morning train leaves Hanko for Helsinki, and an afternoon train returns west. The service also adds one Hanko-to-Helsinki train on Saturday and one Helsinki-to-Hanko train on Sunday. VR says the current arrangement runs until 12 December 2026.
What the H means
The H is the passenger-facing line letter for this service. The trains use Sm5 electric commuter rolling stock, but the journey is a regional connection between western Uusimaa and Helsinki—not the Helsinki-area H commuter line that some passengers may remember.
The new trains stop at Huopalahti, Kauklahti and Masala as well as the stations farther west. That makes the service useful for more than end-to-end trips: it creates direct journeys from Hanko and Raasepori towards Espoo and western Helsinki.
The weekend additions
On Saturday, an extra train leaves Hanko at 10:50 towards Helsinki. On Sunday, an extra train leaves Helsinki at 18:23 towards Hanko. These departures make a weekend visit more practical, but they are not a full all-day frequency. Check the timetable for your exact date rather than assuming the H runs regularly throughout the day.
One accessibility detail at Siuntio
VR highlights a platform-height difference at Siuntio. Passengers who need step-free boarding should use the Helsinki end of the train and follow the train crew's instructions. This is the kind of small operational detail that can determine whether a new connection is genuinely useful, so it is worth planning before arrival at the platform.
What passengers should do
Search the exact journey in Junat's train schedules before leaving. The H service is a temporary timetable arrangement, and individual departures can still change because of engineering work or operational disruptions. The larger significance is simple: Hanko now has a direct train shaped around a real working day. It does not solve every journey, but it removes an important change for the passengers whose travel matches the morning and afternoon services.
