Frequently asked questions

What is this site for?

Junat.net, founded in fall 2015, provides you with real-time departure boards for all train stations reachable by Finnish railway services. It is easy to use on any device, be it a smartphone, tablet or smart TV. While originally crafted for personal use, the site has since attracted a wide audience and now serves thousands of daily users.

Is Junat.net available as a mobile app?

Yes! The iPhone app is now available in App Store.

Alternatively you can add the web site to your home screen. Further instructions: iOS, Android.

Where does the schedule data come from?

The real-time traffic information is based on open data provided by the Finnish Transport Agency's Digitraffic API, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0.

How reliable are the schedules?

Pretty reliable. Junat.net often knows about delays even before they are visible on the station's departure board. On the other hand, some exceptional occurrences such as late minute track changes sometimes don't make it to the web. Do pay attention to the boards and announcements while at the station.

Delay estimates are calculated by the Finnish Transport Agency system. Actual departure times are tracked either automatically or manually depending on the track section. We will get the data a bit slower on track sections where staff enter departure data manually.

Who is the author and how did this site came to be?

Joonas Rouhiainen wrote the site on his spare time, just for fun. I wanted to display a departure board for my train station on a smart TV and thought others might also find this kind of service useful.

What kind of data do you collect from your users?

Only normal anonymized web analytics data. The geolocation feature transmits your location temporarily to the server for the sole purpose of calculating the nearest station – this data is not stored or shared with third parties.
